  • Under 14 CFR §61.129, pilots must log specific totals of flight time, including cross-country and pilot-in-command time, before qualifying for a Commercial Pilot Certificate. Likewise, 14 CFR §61.65 requires a minimum amount of instrument flight experience, including cross-country IFR operations.

    Common ways pilots build time:

    • Cross-country flights to accumulate required PIC and cross-country hours

    • Safety pilot flying to log simulated instrument time while splitting aircraft costs

    • Solo aircraft rental for flexible hour-building

    • Longer cross-country trips to efficiently build time while gaining experience in new environments

    • Proficiency flights to stay sharp while working toward certificate requirements

  • How it works at Rocky Mountain:

You will be paired with one of our MEI’s (required for all multi time building flights). From there the two of you will define a plan based on the mission you want to accomplish. Sometimes people will fly short out-and-backs, sometimes they take the aircraft for a few days. Route planning and flight specific details are up to the renter and CFI.

Contact us at least 4 to 6 weeks prior to your desired time building dates. During the spring and summer our schedule for our Seminoles fills up far in advance. You may be put on a waitlist if we cannot immediately accommodate you.

All reservations are first come, first serve. However, priority is given to checkrides, then lessons, then renters. Although we do our best to predict aircraft availability, we cannot guarantee it. Please plan accordingly.

    ________________

Under 14 CFR §61.160 and 14 CFR §61.159, pilots must meet significant flight experience requirements before qualifying for an ATP certificate, which is required if you are to act as a pilot for U.S. airlines under 14 CFR §121.436.

While not all of these hours must be multi-engine time, many pilots build additional multi-engine experience to strengthen their resume and prepare for the systems, performance considerations, and workload associated with multi-engine aircraft.

*With the exception of N144RU, we do not allow time builders to be checked out for solo flight in our Piper Seminoles. If you would like to be checked out in N144RU, please see our Checkout Minimums page for more info.

    1. Fill out the New Student/Renter Documents, and submit all required identification documents to the front desk in person.

    2. Give us a call at 303-465-4600 to schedule. We do our best to accommodate scheduling preferences. However, all reservations are first come, first serve.

    3. Make sure to get your instructor’s contact information. It’s usually best if you coordinate directly with them prior to your first reservation together.

We’ll see you on the flight line!

Explore our full fleet on the Aircraft page. With the exception of our Cessna 310, our entire fleet is available for time building.

For the Seminoles, N442MK, N692CF, and N442SA require a CFI onboard for time building. N144RU is the only Seminole approved for solo time building once the required checkout minimums have been met.

Checkout minimums vary by aircraft, so please refer to those requirements.
